Bear and
Marmot in Germany and the Czech Republic
Dresden
Dresden was mighty interesting... to
me, it had the most Soviet looking architecture of anywhere.
It wasn't on the grand scale of East Berlin, but it was just
varied and interesting.
They say Chemnitz has was completely
redone as a "worker's paradise", but I haven't been there.
Maybe next time.
Above,
a picture of Praguer Allee (formerly Karl Marx Allee),
stretching from the train station to the city center.
Oddly enough, the DDR city plan of Dresden reminded me of two grandly planned American places: Disneyland and the city of Irvine, both located in Orange County, California. Big boulevards, massive office and residential blocks, fountains and planters placed just so to catch your eye. Nothing is left to chance, everything is planned and orderly.
There's one difference nowadays, though: Orange County is much more rabidly dogmatic than eastern Germany. Are Republicans that different than Communists?
Enjoying a kebab
lunch!
I did happen to enjoy a taste of the German national dish
in Dresden: kebab!
Yum!
