Chisinau is a leafy, green city, with many plane trees and maples shading the streets. Of course, we were there when it was winter, so we didn't see any of that.
I can say that it's a spacious feeling city--it feels like a mid-sized American college town, somewhere in the West or Midwest. Think Spokane, Washington or Lincoln, Nebraska... though the climate is much closer to Spokane than Lincoln!
Here I am on a typical street. One very dangerous thing is that the sidewalks aren't de-iced. When we were there, the temperature fluctuated from 5C during the day to -5C at night. This was just enough to melt some of the ice in the day, and cold enough for it to freeze back into a nice glaze at night! So walking around town is a challenge... especially if you've gone shopping and are carrying a few bottles of the very excellent local wine! |
We saw this interesting building next to the presidential palace. I liked the architectural style, which wasn't like anything I've seen before. It vaguely looks like a house in the Prairie style, with Eastern and Southern European influences. |
This Orthodox church stands on one of the corners of 31 August Street. |
Just outside of town is the circus, housed in this interesting building. It's on the way to Cricova... our next page in this photo album! |
